September 2025 2nd Mile Giving Partner

Our Second Mile Giving ministry partner for the month of September is California Lutheran University (CLU).  CLU continues to offer high quality education, both undergraduate and graduate.  The mission of CLU is to “educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character, in judgment, confident in identity and vocation, and committed to service in justice.”

CLU is one of two ELCA Lutheran Universities on the West Coast.  The home campus is in Thousand Oaks, and is complemented by satellite centers in Oxnard, Santa Maria, and Westlake Village, and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley.

The University now has 3,351 students (undergraduate: 2,297 and graduate: 1,054).  Their students come from 40 states and 67 countries, and represent a diversity of faiths and cultures.  CLU is led by a faculty of 193 full-time professors and 244 part-time professors; the average class size for all programs is 14:1.

In the past year, there have been two noteworthy changes at the administration level of CLU.  Rev. Dr. John Nunes, who was appointed interim President in 2024, was appointed permanent (and ninth) president on July 1, 2025.

Also recently, Rev. Dr. Colleen Windham Hughes, Associate Vice President for Mission and Identity for CLU, was appointed as Rector of California Lutheran Theological Seminary.
