In August, we are celebrating a new Ministry partner in our Second Mile
Giving program. Our new partner is Bread for the World (BFTW).
BFTW is a Christian advocacy organization urging major decision
makers to do all they can to pursue a world without hunger. The mission of the
BFTW is “to educate and equip people to advocate for policies and programs that
can help end hunger in the U.S. and around the world.”
When our Social Ministry team was looking for a ministry partner that
advocates for work to end world hunger, not only did the team select a Christian
organization, the team chose an organization that has strong Lutheran roots.
The founding of BFTW goes dates back to early 1970’s, when Lutheran
Pastor Arthur Simon in New York City pulled together Catholic and
Protestant leaders to reflect on how Christians could be mobilized to influence
U.S. policies addressing causes of hunger. In 1974, the group came together
as a working force, and Bread for the World was formed. Rev. Simon served as
president of BFTW from 1974 to 1991. Today one of the leading advocates for
BFTW is Lutheran layperson Rick Steves, who speaks tirelessly for the
organization.
The work of BFTW has grown from these roots to be a major Christian
organization that advocates effectively for addressing hunger in the US and in
the world. Our Social Ministry team often uses suggestions drawn from BFTW for
hosting letter writing in postcard writing events at All Saints Lutheran. Please join
us in uplifting and supporting this Christian organization.
