October 2025 2nd Mile Giving Partner

Our Second Mile Ministry program in October brings focus to one of the main

problems in our world today: hunger. The ministry partner for the month of October is

Heifer International.

Heifer International’s approach to helping end hunger is by working through

agriculture. Simply put, the mission of Heifer is “to end hunger and proverty in a

sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their

communities.”

Dan West (a Church of the Brethren member), the founder, 62 years ago brought 17 heifers to Puerto Rico. In the years since, this led to the formation of Heifer International, which has now grown and has projects in 19 countries (many projects are in Central Africa, where there is much malnutrition).

Heifer works with "small holders", farmers and partners at all levels to

establish farms and food systems that feed families, create economic opportunity and

minimize stress on the planet, focusing on "climate–conscious production and

inclusive markets.” Since 1944, Heifer has helped 59.8 million households to become

economically self-reliant.

On October 11, the second Sunday of this month (and Second Mile Giving

Sunday), we will be lifting up and celebrating the work of Heifer International, including

taking a second offering. Also on October 11, we will take some time – after worship - to
