It’s July. We are halfway through the year and it’s once again an opportunity to
celebrate and learn more about San Francisco Night Ministry. SF Night Ministry is the
ministry partner for July in the All Saints Lutheran Second Mile Giving program.
We will have a special guest to help us. Ben Deshazo-Couchot, our former choir
director and current Care Lines Director for SF Night Ministry, will visit with us on July
19. Ben will be our guest preacher on this Sunday and will stay afterwards for an
informative presentation after worship. July 19 is the third Sunday in the month, and we
will do our Second Mile offering on that Sunday as well.
SF Ministry is the church’s “Night Shift” in San Francisco. Every night, a San
Francisco night minister goes out and makes contact with people on the streets, offering
comfort, hope, and a listening ear. This all started in 1964, when the San Francisco
Council of Churches first started night walks on the streets. Five years later, San
Francisco Night Ministry was born, and has been on the streets ever since (that's over
22,000 nights)!
Not long after starting the program, SF night ministry offered the same service
through a Care Line, in which people in crisis or perhaps having suicide thoughts or just
being lonely could call and share feelings, and receive conversation and support with a
nonjudgmental person. It is estimated that in the last year, between the night visits on
the street and the conversations on the telephone, they were over 34,000 significant
spiritual and emotional care contacts.
This is an important ministry in the Bay area (the Care Lines received calls from
persons far outside of the city of San Francisco). Please join us in supporting this
significant ministry.
