June is a unique month in our Second Mile Giving program. There are two
agencies being lifted up in June, and we call them our Advocacy Partners. These
agencies are the Lutheran Office of Public Policy (LOPP) in California, and Lutheran
Engagement and Advocacy Nevada (LEAN) in the state of Nevada.
These agencies represent the coordinated witness of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) on issues of public policy in California and Nevada. In
addition to advocacy on legislative matters, the agencies provide education and
networking for ELCA congregations in both states.
Here’s a little info about one of the programs/services offered by LOPP. It’s
called Advocacy, Info & Questions (AIQ). The roots of this program started during
COVID-19, when LOPP was seeking ways to connect with advocates throughout
California. The program at the time of the beginning was known as Advocacy in
Quarantine (AIQ). It was a half an hour call-in, on Zoom, in which LOPP gave an update
on state and federal legislative priorities.
The old program has morphed into AIQ and continues to give updates on state
and federal legislative priorities, reaching out to 400 ELCA congregations in California.
This happens every Wednesday, at noon. For those who are interested in receiving
these updates on Zoom, go to the website (lutheranpublicpolicyca.org/advocacy) for the
link, or for email reminders contact Edie Lott at thelotts@gmail.com.
We are grateful for the advocacy work of LOPP and LEAN. Please join us in
supporting the important work of these Christian advocacy organizations.
