Genesis 2:15: "15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it."

I want to share information I received from WildCare, an invaluable nonprofit organization which helps save animals and provides education about our furry, feathered & slithery neighbors. There are valuable tips below to protect both wildlife and Halloween trick or treaters (click either green link).

A great resource for parents + kids have a natural curiousity about animals, = an easy, intriguing & informational conversation about safeguards and a potential family moment which combines fun + function This reminded me of when my husband & I were both working parents and my efforts to enlist cooperation in managing the growing box of clean-mostly white-odd-socks that needed attention. I declared "sock parties" to the reluctance of my husband & 4 kids. The day came, I put a sheet down, dumped the socks in the middle & we sat around the edges. We all claimed ours, matched & rolled socks; socks were tossed around, jokes were made, but only a few unmatched socks remained when we finished - pizza & salad followed! Fun and successful, everyone looked forward to future ones. Now my kids are grown, STILL talk & laugh about those sock parties! Wishing you a Happy and Safe Halloween.

FROM WILDCARE:

For this Western Screech Owl, a family's outdoor Halloween decorations weren't just scary, they were life-threatening!

A Marin Humane officer responded to a call from homeowners saying that their artificial spider web had ensnared an accidental victim. Upon arrival at the home, the officer found the owl hanging upside down and blinking.

He gently snipped the bird out of the web, and brought him, panting with stress and still wrapped in filament, to WildCare.

Another patient, an Anna's Hummingbird, was also brought to WildCare due to fake spiderwebbing. His feet were completely tangled in the white stuff. Our team required a magnifying glass to make sure every thread was removed from the bird's incredibly tiny feet.

WildCare's Wildlife Hospital treats dozens of different animals for entanglement injuries every year. During the lead-up to Halloween, we know that the very next patient admitted could have something spooky or spangly wrapped around his body.

Between the risk of entanglement, the proximity of tasty foods like carved pumpkins and discarded candy, and the diminishing light in the evening, this is a dangerous time of year for wildlife.
