Our Second Mile Giving Partner for October.

Updated: Oct 1, 2021

Hunger (and poverty) are still very real in the world today. 821 million people go to bed hungry every night.

Despite this, big strides are being made to turn this around by several organization and many individuals. One of those organizations is Heifer International, our Second Mile Giving ministry partner in October.

Heifer's approach is a ground up, person to person approach. It all started with Joe West, a midwestern farmer and a Church of the Brethren member. He had served as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War to provide cups of milk to refugees. From that experience, he started (in 1944) providing cows to impoverished areas of the world, and Heifer International was born.

Today, Heifer's volunteers and employees work in 21 countries around the world alongside local farmers and business owners. The programs of Heifer have expanded from providing livestock to multi-purpose programs; training in animal husbandry, natural resource management, leadership skills and gender equity. Heifer's mission today is "to end hunger and poverty while caring for the earth."

Please join with the All Saints Lutheran family in supporting this wonderful and important outreach
