October 2023 2nd Mile Giving Partner
Updated: Nov 29

There is hunger in the world. As much as 10% of the world’s population goes
hungry every day. We’ve written about it in our Trumpet articles this year, last year, in
previous years. Hunger is a large problem, yet we continue to raise hope; we
continue to raise and celebrate organizations that are working to reduce and end
hunger.
One of these organizations is Heifer International, our Second Mile Ministry
giving partner for the month of October. Heifer started back during the Second World
War, when in 1944, a midwestern farmer and Church of the Brethren member, Joe
West, got it going. He started by providing cows to impoverished areas of the world,
and the organization got its roots.
Today, Heifer International has projects in 19 countries, on 4 continents.
Paraphrasing what Heifer tells us in its website, Heifer works to end hunger and poverty
in partnership with communities it serves. Their programs support entrepreneurs around the world, creating lasting change from the ground up.
This begins with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture, and is followed up
by mentorship to help participants in the projects build a business, and ultimately to gain access to supply chains and markets. These families are able to earn a living income and then continually lift up their communities as they train future generations of leaders.
Heifer International is an organization that is working to end hunger and poverty,
and raise hope.
Please join with the All Saints Lutheran family in supporting this wonderful and important outreach.
